Knight Hall, Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland
Gipe Associates, Inc. provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering
for the construction of a new building at the University of Maryland to house the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism.
The building is 53,400 square feet and provides state-of-the-art
teaching facilities, computer labs, a student library,
offices, and a professional outreach center. To serve the
buildings heating and cooling demand the central campus
utilities was extended from the Satellite Central Utility
Building (SCUB) located with-in the adjacent Tawes building.
In order to hydraulically de-couple the buildings distribution
piping loop from the primary distribution loop, flat plate
type heat exchangers were installed with-in the new facility.
A variable speed pumping system was utilized to distribute
chilled water and heater water throughout the building.
The building’s central Heating Ventilating and Air conditioning
(HVAC) equipment consists of multiple Variable Air Volume
(VAV) Rooftop Air Handling units.
Knight Hall is the first University-owned, LEED Gold Certified
Building. The facility was designed to promote interaction
between students by giving them an array of media in various
education settings.
