Berkshire Elementary School (New Construction)
Initially Gipe Associates provided MEP engineering consulting for the Feasibility Study. The study involved an analysis of two options, Major Renovation/Addition and a Replacement School Building. The analysis included descriptions of MEP recommendations, cost estimates, and phasing impacts for both options. The feasibility study complied IAC/PSCP Guidelines and requirements.
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems design included HVAC, fire protection, power, interior lighting, site lighting, fire alarm, telecommunications, and security. The project was an improvement upon the most recent BCPS prototype, implementing updated code requirements. The facility consists of 95,000 square feet. The Mechanical Systems, in concert with the Architectural considerations create spaces that are flexible, functional, energy efficient, and respond to the needs of this facility. The HVAC System utilizes energy conservation techniques to the greatest extent possible, while maintaining comfortable control. Heating and Cooling is provided utilizing a geothermal system with approximately 132 boreholes.
Electrical engineering design consisted of incoming electrical service provided by a utility pad-mounted transformer. The service is 2500 ampere at 480/277 volts, three phase, four wire. The facility was provided with 25% space capacity to allow for future equipment additions/renovations. A solar photovoltaic system was designed under an add alternate that would allow for approximately 5% of the building’s estimated energy usage to be provided. Generator backup was provided to support life safety systems, area of refuge communications and telecommunications systems, security systems, kitchen refrigeration equipment, building management system, and heating equipment.
A variety of interior and exterior lighting systems were designed to comply with ASHRAE 90.1 lighting power density requirements. Fixtures included LED dimmable fixtures with features appropriate for each individual space.
