Sussex Consortium School, Cape Henlopen School District

Sussex Consortium is a new special education school in Lewes, Delaware serving students from 3 to 21 years old.  Gipe Associates provided mechanical, (including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) electrical (including power, interior lighting, site lighting, fire alarm), plumbing and fire protection system design and contract administration for the 106,000sf new school.

The MEP design included energy efficient air-cooled variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems with heat recovery, kitchen ventilation systems with heat pipe energy recovery, and swimming pool dehumidification units with air to air energy recovery.  The ventilation systems for the building were served by a water-cooled dual temperature system consisting of a closed-circuit evaporative cooler and high efficiency condensing gas-fired boilers.  The air handling units for the ventilation systems were hydronic energy recovery ventilators with enthalpy wheels to capture waste building heat to help temper the code required outside air needed for the building.
