Chesapeake College – Health Professions & Athletic Center – LEED Platinum
The new Health Professions and Athletic Center (HPAC) at Chesapeake Community College provides space for all of the health and wellness programs. Mock labs for the nursing program, EMS program, radiologic Science and surgical technology include special equipment for students to gain a hands on, real life learning experience. The renovation also included a gymnasium, athletic space upgrade, new conference space and office spaces. Additionally, by bringing together all allied health opportunities into one location, the College will now be able to best utilize its personnel, educational, financial and other resources while minimizing administrative and operational costs and providing a more comprehensive college experience for allied health students. The Mechanical and Electrical Systems design were based on a healthcare training and athletics facility of totally 83,483 square feet. The renovated area was 37,611 square feet and the new additional was 45,872 square feet.
Gipe Associates provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and contract administration for the renovation and new construction, which included heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, domestic cold/hot water, power, interior lighting, site lighting, fire alarm, and fire protection systems. Sustainable design features included geothermal heating and cooling, demand controlled ventilation, energy recovery on all ventilation units, variable speed fans and pumps, waste heat recovery using heat pipes on all ERV units, LED light sources, lighting controls via occupancy/vacancy sensors, and 0-10V dimming. The new state-of-the-art facility achieved LEED Platinum Certification, the highest of the LEED Certifications.
