Frederick High School – Feasibility Study & New Construction

Gipe Associates completed both Phase I and Phase II for the new Frederick High School.

Phase I included a comprehensive feasibility study to identify the facility’s renovation and modernization needs. It was determined that the best option was to fully replace the existing school.

Phase II included the design and contract administration of the new 270,600 sf high school.  Construction took place on the existing site while the original building was occupied.  The new school has a state rated capacity of 1,826 students, houses a 853-seat auditorium with supporting musical and theater rooms, multiple gyms, and over 60 general ed and science classrooms.  A vocational-technology suite on the first floor houses a food and culinary labs, computer/technology labs, woodworking, horticulture, and photography lab which required specialized systems such as kitchen ventilation for gas-fired equipment, dust removal systems, and other ventilation and CO2 removal for the other labs.

The HVAC system consisted of a geothermal water source heat pump system with 440 boreholes at 450 foot deep, and 1129 ton capacity.  Conventional air handling systems were provided to serve large occupancy spaces such as Media Centers, Gymnasiums, the Cafeteria, and Auditorium.  VRV systems with ceiling cassette fan coil units were selected for the administration Areas so that they could operate independently from the rest of the school, providing cost savings during unoccupied times.  Water heating system utilizes high efficiency condensing boilers. Interior equipment rooms and penthouses were constructed to protect mechanical equipment and promote longevity of equipment life.

The three-story new building is an energy efficient, LEED Silver certified facility.  Subsystem monitoring of gas, electric, and water was displayed on a dashboard systems so facility owners can easily monitor utility usage for HVAC, lighting, plug loads, and gas-fired kitchen equipment.

Once the new facility was occupied, the old building was demolished.  Athletic fields and site amenities were restored and/or reconstructed.
