Howard High School 1927 Historic Building Modernization & Commissioning

The Howard High School renovation project was a systemic renovation that included architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, technology and fire protection upgrades.  The project included historical preservation and renovation aspects due to the rich history of the Howard High School. The original Howard High School facility was constructed in the early 1870’s and was the only African American High School in Delaware. The current facility was part of a construction project by Pierre S. du Pont in 1927.  The school’s large historic Auditorium has hosted such notable speakers as W.E.B. DuBois and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Howard High School had not been substantially renovated in the last 50 years.  The renovated educational facility includes state of the art classrooms, lab spaces, performance theatre, gymnasium and supporting spaces.  The facility utilizes numerous energy conservation measures within the HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical systems.  The energy conservation measures included in the new construction are as follows:

1. Decoupled ventilation system with exhaust air energy recovery.
2. Demand controlled ventilation system.
3. Variable refrigerant volume heat pump system with heat recovery.
4. High efficiency condensing type boilers serving low temperature central hot water heating system.
5. Variable speed pumping distribution.
6. Variable speed domestic water booster pump system.
7. Single zone variable air volume rooftop units serving auditorium and gym spaces.
8. High efficiency plumbing fixtures.
9. All LED lighting.
10. Occupancy and daylighting light controls.
11. Enhanced Commissioning of HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Systems.
12. Digital energy management system.
