Mount Airy Middle School – New Construction

Gipe Associates provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering for the new 111,000sf Mt. Airy Middle School.  Thirteen HVAC zones serve this large middle school.  HVAC zones are independently controlled in order to conserve energy where applicable.  Spaces such as administrative offices are zones so they can operate year round, while areas  that are only used during the school year have the ability to operate only when occupied.  Gipe designed an efficient geothermal system consisting of water to air heat pumps with 100% outside air heat recovery units.  Electrical service is a 2500 amperes at 480/277 volts, three phase, four wire service.  Emergency power was provided by a natural gas engine generator set and automatic transfer switches and is sized to serve emergency lighting, fire alarm system, fire pump, and all life safety/communication systems.  The new building has updated technology, a better instructional design that accommodates the school’s entire student body.  111,000 SF / Construction Cost: $32.5M
