Rossville Elementary School (New Construction)

The Rossville Elementary School Replacement was the 6th prototype design for Baltimore County Public Schools.  Prototype designs always present a challenge for design teams because no project site is exactly the same.  Facility layouts evolve to better accommodate incoming utilities, site challenges, etc.

Gipe Associates provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems design for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, power, interior lighting, site lighting, telecommunications, and fire alarm and life safety systems as well as contract administration services for the new Rossville Elementary School on Ridge Road.

The mechanical design consisted of an energy-efficient geothermal heat pump systems, a dedicated outdoor air system for fresh air, single zone variable volume air handling units for high capacity spaces, ductless split systems for small spaces, and electric auxiliary heaters to serve mechanical/electrical rooms, storage spaces, and stairways.  Automatic Temperature Control/Energy Management Systems were provided for all spaces to ensure an appropriate thermal environment for each space.

Gipe Associates designed alternate bid designs to support sub system monitoring of gas, electric (HVAC, lighting plug loads, kitchen), and water.

The electrical system is supported by a 480/277 volts, three phase, four wire service with equipment housed in a dedicated main electrical room.  A solar PV system will be grid-interactive, battery-less, and connected to the building’s electrical system, generating in parallel with the utility grid.  The system will include a data acquisition/monitoring system capable of recording and displaying PV system parameters via the internet in order to be utilized as a teaching tool too.

The emergency power system is supported by a packaged diesel engine generator set and ATS to serve emergency lighting, fire alarm system, fire pump, MDF/IDF data and phone closets, security, kitchen refrigeration equipment, BMS, and select heating equipment.
