Prince George’s County Police Headquarters Renovation
Gipe Associates provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design that included HVAC, power, interior lighting, site lighting, fire alarm, and fire protection systems design for 8903 Presidential Parkway, a six (6) story brick and block office building. The 120,000 SF office building renovation consisted of a complete demolition and design of new interior and supporting systems. The new MEP systems were designed to support the Prince George’s County Police Headquarters. The renovated facility houses office space for numerous departments, administrative area, a police museum, law library, multi-purpose meeting rooms, TV studio, attached parking garage, elevators, large storage areas and a rooftop penthouse to enclose all equipment.
The HVAC system for the facility is comprised of a series of water-to-water heat pumps, cooling towers and plate and frame heat exchangers that provide heating and cooling water to fan-powered sensible cooling terminal units that serve the individual spaces. Outside air is provided by four (4) dedicated outdoor air handling units with energy recovery and reheat for dehumidification control. Outdoor air is distributed by means of ducted supply and return to each individual space.
Incoming electrical services required upgrades to support the demands of the new mechanical systems and diner/kitchen area. In order to reduce the electrical load, natural gas was brought to the site to serve the kitchen cooling equipment and heating equipment. Uninterruptible power supply was provided for the facility’s critical electronic systems, including telecommunications, security, card access, CCTV systems and a new emergency generator was sized to include life safety loads and standby loads. 120,000sf / $22M
