Tucker Road Ice Rink

The Tucker Road Ice Rink is an indoor rink in Ft. Washington owned and operated by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Department of Parks and Recreation.  The ice rink facility was previously closed due to a significant fire that took place in 2017.

Gipe Associates was hired to conduct an assessment of the current MEP space requirements and develop MEP systems concepts for consideration in the new facility.  We provided detailed energy modeling during design development and completed construction documents in early 2019.

The new facility consists of approximately 48,860 square feet and is primarily intended for general indoor community, ice-skating recreation, figure skating, and ice hockey.  The facility now has a National Hockey League-sized ice rink with seating bleachers for 300 to 350 spectators. The design includes a variety of other spaces such as a flexible classroom/party room, a vending café snack bar, a dance studio, a skate rental space, six locker rooms, two officials’ changing rooms, and a family restroom/changing area.

Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design including the HVAC, domestic water, power, interior lighting, site lighting, and fire alarm systems was provided for the new Tucker Road Ice Rink.  HVAC design for ice rink facilities requires specialized and specific dehumidification controls.  Propane fired infrared heaters serve the spectator area, with careful consideration and protection of the ice rink area.  Packaged rooftop air handling units are utilized for the locker rooms and team areas, lobby, and public meeting spaces.   Electrical design included all electrical systems to provide a complete & functioning state- of-the-art facility.  Gipe Associates designed the power systems, distribution, interior and exterior lighting and associated controls, emergency power, security, telecommunications, and data systems.
