Wor-Wic Community College Geothermal Project

Gipe Associates, Inc. provided heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) and supporting electrical (power, fire alarm, interlock for duct detectors) for the Academic & Administrative Building & Maner Technology Center at WorWic Community College.  The geothermal system design was based on a total combined square footage of 74,000 and completely replaced the existing ice storage system and hot water boilers.  New ATC control system was provided for both buildings.  The new HVAC system included heat recovery, water cooled VRV systems, and energy recovery ventilators.

The project challenge was replacing the existing system, that served essentially 3 buildings (connected by enclosed breezeways), during occupied periods.  Gipe Associates developed a 5-phase plan prior to project inception that allowed the building to be occupied during on-going renovations.  This unique and thorough phasing plan ultimately won Gipe the project and the plan was successfully implemented.  To reduce project costs and improve construction phasing, we were able to reuse the existing chilled water and hot water piping for the new geothermal system.  74,000sf / $7.9M
