Wor-Wic Community College – New Applied Technology Building

WorWic Community College’s new Applied Technology facility offers 50,000 sf of state-of-the-art spaces for workforce development including commercial driving, welding, and HVACR education.  Gipe Associates provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design for the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, power, and lighting systems.  The project incorporates sustainable design elements such as LED lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency boilers, high efficiency chillers, variable speed pumping, variable flow make- up air systems, energy recovery ventilators, and hydronic ceiling cassettes. The project is finalizing LEED points and is on schedule to receive a LEED version 4.1 silver certification. The buildings energy use due to process loads from HVAC lab trainers and Welding ventilation/ Make-up air units will be higher per square foot than a typical academic building. However, due to the energy efficient equipment, systems and strategies employed in the design we calculated an energy use index of  72  kBtu/sf/year. The project was fully commissioned independently from the design or construction team and points were obtained for enhanced commissioning under the LEED rating system. The final building design and construction of the same was elegant yet functional and promotes the image of the trades as a noble profession, which was a primary goal of the College!
