Youths Benefit Elementary School

Gipe Associates provided the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design services for air conditioning installation for two existing classroom buildings totaling 97,000 SF on the site, one that serves students in kindergarten through second grade and the other students in third, fourth and fifth graders.

The replacement project also called for building a 149,694 SF, two-level school around and over the two existing buildings on the 26-acre Youth’s Benefit site. The first level includes a cafeteria, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms and art and music classrooms and a computer lab. The second level, which covers more area than the first, has the majority of the classrooms – grades 1 through 5 – and the media center. This level also surrounded an outdoor courtyard with an amphitheater. The cooling system consists of two (2) 250-ton air cooled chillers and controlled in lead/lag fashion. The chilled water system utilizes constant volume primary pumping based on chiller requirements and variable speed secondary chilled water distribution pumping to air handling units strategically located in mechanical mezzanines. Variable air volume air handling units were used to serve classrooms, media center and office areas.
